S T E I N H A U E R
I got the news in the email a moment ago–my US publisher, St Martin’s Minotaur, has sold the UK rights to the end of the series, Victory Square, to HarperCollins UK.
Though not entirely unexpected (my UK editor wrote me to tell me how much the loved the book), it’s great news, because HarperCollins is my third UK publisher (after Orion and Random House), and it looks like they might be staying around a while, despite my overall poor showing on those islands up there…
…
For those wondering, so far in this career I’ve always sold World English rights to my US publisher, and it’s their responsibility–and very much in their benefit–to sell off the UK rights. Though I only see a percentage of that UK advance, and only after my original US advance has been paid off, this arrangement has had the benefit of keeping St Martin’s happy–in particular with the first two books. In that instance, they earned back my advance before any of my books had even been published!
Ergo…I’ve only had one US publisher.

Orion? really? I thought the first two were Heinemann/Arrow and the last two HarperCollins…

You’re right, however my first UK editor was at Orion when she bought 1 & 2, so I was technically with them. But she was quickly lured to RH (Heinemann) and brought me with her. Of course she was then laid off…
