I never want to see anyone, and I never want to go anywhere or do anything. I just want to write.

This quote came my way via Creative Screenwriting Magazine’s weekly newsletter, which I subscribed to back when I was more serious about learning screenwriting. I got less serious about it, and so I almost never scroll down past the quotation opener, which heads each newsletter. They’re often from novelists, and sometimes they hit home in wonderful ways.
This one hit me as soon as I read it. It reminded me that I’m not the only completely anti-social scribbler who is so obsessed with writing that simply getting out to visit with friends is an immensely difficult act. Nice to know you’re not alone in your madness.

I just sit at a typewriter and curse a bit.

There’s your problem: typewriter!

It’s having to promote my books that’s really offensive to me.

I agree to some extent, Ingrid. I don’t mind promotional work if it really adds value and if it’s aimed at people who might be genuinely interested. Sadly, too much of it fails on both counts.

I dunno–I’ve done very little promotional work, so maybe my judgement is useless, but though I’ve always begun with trepidation the little I’ve done has been pretty enjoyable. One thing I’ve NOT done though is the extended bookstore tour, reading to empty houses and stuff like that–I can imagine that would be pretty trying.

What a quote! Thank you so much for putting that up there. I feel better.
